BIG BIRD
Swan Lake, Sadler’s Wells
January 2007
We went to Sadler’s Wells, only a 15 minute bus ride away from where we live, to see Matthew Bourne’s company in Swan Lake. The set lighting and modern interpretations were spectacular. This version premiered in 1995 and has toured the UK and US. It’s won 30 major theatre awards and tours Australia next.
Aside from a major injection of humour it is more unusual in that the expected corps de ballet of elegant female swans is represented by an all male group of, at times, menacing birds. The theatre is magnificent and the current building opened in 1998, after a major fundraising programme, supported by Lottery funding.
